Chile has officially joined the Global Offshore Wind Alliance (GOWA).
With over 6,000 kilometers of coastline and world-class wind resources, particularly along its southern coast, Chile is uniquely positioned to become a regional leader in offshore wind development. The country now joins Brazil 🇧🇷and Colombia 🇨🇴 as GOWA members, strengthening regional collaboration ahead of #COP30.
Diego Pardow, Minister of Energy at Ministerio de Energía Chile, highlighted the potential of offshore wind: “On behalf of the Government of Chile, I want to express our gratitude for Chile’s incorporation into GOWA. We are a leading nation in renewable energy and are moving quickly into the second phase of our energy transition. At this moment, it is essential for Chile to continue exploring new technologies to strengthen our decarbonization process. In this effort, offshore wind energy will be key, and being part of GOWA will allow us to build a clear roadmap for the developers of these projects.”
Christian Stenberg, Deputy Permanent Secretary for International Affairs at the Danish The Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities, welcomed the news: “With its impressive coast line, Chile has a significant offshore wind potential, and we are really pleased to welcome Chile as a new member of the Global Offshore Wind Alliance. Offshore wind has a critical role in delivering secure, clean and affordable energy, and driving economic growth. To accelerate its deployment, we need to collaborate globally across governments, industry, international organisations and other stakeholders, finding together the solutions to ensure efficient processes, mitigate risks and unlock investments”
Through this partnership, Chile will collaborate with governments, developers, investors, and civil society to accelerate the deployment of offshore wind. A key focus will be on floating technology, given the country’s significant deep-sea potential. This effort will advance clean energy while supporting healthy, productive marine ecosystems at national, regional, and global levels.
Amisha Patel, Head of the GOWA Secretariat, said: “We’re delighted to welcome Chile to GOWA. As a rapidly developing nation in Latin America, Chile brings deep experience in renewables and an exciting vision for offshore wind. We are so glad to see regional momentum in Latin America grow ahead of COP30, with Chile becoming the third Latin American country to join GOWA, following Brazil and Colombia. Chile’s membership strengthens our global community and is a powerful signal of the region’s growing offshore wind potential.”
